Gilding Materials: This picture shows my desk during a practice session—my first shots at gilding with gum ammoniac and making paint from pigment. The narrow strip is a scrap of , and the pink areas are drying gum ammoniac. On the left is a breathing tube I made from a piece of notebook paper. In the back, a jar of yellow ocher pigment has been made into paint with glair. I found the little wooden ice-cream sticks very useful for scooping pigment, and had enough of them for each color.
